Do you ever wonder if you’ll be able to save a life after taking a first aid course? Do you consider what kind of training / knowledge my first aid instructor has? Have you ever thought what your first aid classroom looks like? As a first aid instructor trainer, instructor and master instructor trainer I will try to answer these questions for you to make you feel more comfortable in a first aid classroom and to encourage you to attend a standard first aid training course near you.
Will I Be Able to Save a Life After Taking a First Aid Course?
You will absolutely be much better prepared to save a life after taking an OH&S approved standard first aid course in Alberta. You will become part of the chain of survival and learn to recognize and manage a wide range of emergencies including heart attacks, anaphylaxis, obstructed airways and many more. You will gain the knowledge of how to use an AED, perform CPR and how and when to call EMS. There is arguably no better way to learn to save a life than by taking a standard first aid course.
What Kind of Training / Knowledge Does a First Aid Instructor Typically Have?
When companies are looking to hire or train instructors they usually look for someone with paramedic experience, lifeguarding, swimming instructors, nurses or anyone with experience in the medical field. Also, anybody with experience as a teacher is often sought after. The teacher may have little to no knowledge about first aid but with my experience, it is easier to teach someone the first aid knowledge than to teach someone to teach.
What Does a First Aid Classroom Look Like?
A first aid classroom is typically one big room with some presentation software and at least 12 seats. Don’t be shocked to find lots of life like manikins and practise first aid kits around. You will also likely see infant manikins that many students are a little shocked to see. Below are some photos of one of the most popular first aid training classrooms in Lethbridge known as Lethbridge First Aid.
